What about charging adapters and cables?
A power adapter and syncing cable will be distributed with every student iPad; Chromebooks will be issued with power cords. Those should be kept at home so that devices are charged nightly. It is up to each individual school as to providing a method of charging devices during the school day.
Are teachers expected to monitor student iPads and Chromebooks?
Teachers are expected to establish a classroom climate that supports learning. This includes monitoring for appropriate use of personal learning devices in the same way that teachers currently monitor other aspects of student behavior.
Who will be teaching students how to use the devices?
Using the devices and their accompanying resources should be part of instruction, not a separate technology course. Phenix City Schools has selected a limited number of core iPad apps to be used across subject areas and grade levels. Teachers are encouraged to integrate core apps instruction as a part of assignments. Specifically, teachers at SGS, CFA and CHS will guide those students in the use of Google Classroom.
What about students who are "opting out" of the 1:1 initiative?
Students who have not paid the $25 insurance premium and/or have no signed AUP on file will be assigned a set of traditional textbooks. Teachers should consider these students when planning classroom activities.

What is SAM-R and what does it have to do with 1:1?
SAM-R is an acronym for Substitution, Augmentation, Modification and Redefinition. Developed by Dr. Ruben Puentedura, it is a way to describe levels for the impact technology has on teaching and learning. At the basic level, technology enhances instruction. In the hands of an effective teacher, technology can also completely transform learning experiences. As personal devices for students are first implemented in Phenix City Schools, many activities will be at the substitution level, where the devices replace activities that have traditionally been dependent on paper and pencil. As experience develops, it is our belief that a 1:1 environment will allow teachers to completely transform teaching and learning experiences, redefining tasks in ways that would previously not been possible without access to technology. |
